Description

Designed by the architectural firm of Frederick Heath and Ambrose Russell, this stately Shingle Style Victorian was built in 1901 for Iowa-born Burton Moore and his wife Rose who had moved to Tacoma in 1891. Moore was a clerk for Pacific Cold Storage and eventually became a trustee of the Pacific Company in 1906. The Pacific Company was a manufacturer of wood milling, wharfing and docking materials.

The Moores paid off the home in 1910 and sold it for $5000 in 1919 before moving to Los Angeles. The Moore House is a contributing structure in the North Slope Historic District and is listed on the local and national registers of historic places.

This impressive Victorian Shingle Style home features a gracefully curved entry parlor, a fireplace in the living room, hardwood floors, original mill work and vintage wallpaper and fixtures. Many of the original windows have been restored, and the kitchen has been thoughtfully updated with vintage appliances and marmoleum flooring. A laundry room and bath off the kitchen provides easy access to the back yard.

Three spacious bedrooms are located upstairs along with a large bathroom with adjacent storage that could easily be reworked to create an en suite bath plus a hall bath. The unfinished basement features ample ceiling height, laundry, storage and a door to the back yard. The grounds include an English garden, a patio, planting areas, a detached one car garage and an adjacent two car parking pad off the alley.

Tacoma’s North Slope is one of Washington State’s largest historic districts, consisting of more than 950 homes. Much of the neighborhood was built on a 166-acre farm owned at one time by Tacoma pioneer Job Carr. The Carr family sold the land for residential development in the 1880s, and the district experienced three distinct building booms from 1888-1893, 1902-1915 and 1919-1929. As a result, the neighborhood features a wide variety of architectural styles including Victorian, Craftsman, Tudor and American Foursquare.

Early North Slope residents of note included Washington State Governor Ernest Lister and a young Bing Crosby. The neighborhood provides easy access to 23-acre Wright Park, an eclectic mix of independently owned shops and restaurants, Stadium Thriftway, the medical center, public and private schools, the waterfront and the soon to be completed light rail extension.
