Description

HISTORY
Built in 1912, this Craftsman Bungalow was once home to prominent Tacoma real estate investor George Carson, who sold the home to physician Clarence Utterback in 1926. Dr. Utterback was born in Dodge City, KS in 1889 and raised in Puyallup. He attended medical school in Los Angeles, graduating as a Doctor of Osteopathy. Utterback subsequently served in the medical corps during World War I and returned to Tacoma after the war to open a medical practice. Utterback, his wife and their three children lived in the house until 1940. Given the prominence of its early owners, this home may be eligible for inclusion on the Tacoma Register of Historic Places with proper exterior restoration.

PROPERTY
This historically significant Proctor Craftsman features a number of intact architectural elements consistent with the period
of construction, including leaded and stained glass entry windows, a dual staircase, vintage hardware and original fir floors and mill work. A gracious formal entry opens to a large living room with original built-ins and a wood burning fireplace. The formal dining room features wainscoting, a window seat and French doors to an adjacent study. The kitchen offers access to a half bath and rear porch with laundry. Three bedrooms and a full bath are located upstairs. The largest bedroom could easily be converted into a master suite with the addition of another bathroom. A balcony off the two smaller bedrooms overlooks a fenced back yard. A family room, shop area and one car garage are located on the lower level.

NEIGHBORHOOD
The Proctor District is one of Tacoma’s most celebrated and desirable neighborhoods, offering an urban village experience reminiscent of a simpler time. The area features some great old historic homes and a wonderful mix of owner operated shops and restaurants, including the upscale Metropolitan Market, Chalet Bowl, Rosewood Cafe and the historic Blue Mouse Theater – the oldest continuously operating movie theater in Washington State. The University of Puget Sound serves as an anchor institution in the neighborhood, providing access to a wide variety of academic, athletic and cultural activities. The Proctor District hosts a lively local farmer’s market every Saturday from April through November, the second largest farmers market in the city. The neighborhood offers excellent public schools, a couple of great parks and easy access to Point Ruston, Point Defiance Park and downtown Tacoma.
